The capital city of the Siem Reap Province, located in the northwestern part of the country is Siem Reap. At the same time, this is a popular tourist destination and a lot of people come from the Angkor region. This city is more than just interesting, and it has museums, old market, cultural village of Cambodia, souvenir shops and a lot more. The architecture in the city is mostly Chinese and colonial, which means that there are a lot of interesting buildings. In addition, this city has modern part and there you can find a lot of hotels and resorts, due to the fact this is mostly a tourist destination. Even better, there are a lot of different restaurants.

History of the city

The name of the city means “Defeat of Siam”, and it is related to an ancient battle between the Khmer and Siamese kingdoms that happened in the 16th century. According to the legend, the king KingAng Chan gave this name to the city after he defeated his king. However, this is just a legend and most children learn that the name of the city comes from unknown source.

Important places in the city

  • Landmine museum- This museum is all about landmines and visitor have a unique chance to see themand learn how they actually work. It is open during the whole year and it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in this province.

  • War museum- This museum contains weapons, vehicles and other items that were used in the last 3 decades in different wars that occurred in the country. Beside items that were used by army of Cambodia, this museum also contains items that were used by Vietnamese army.

  • National museum of Angkor- This is a modern museum that was opened in 2007. It uses the latest technology to show the visitors the golden age of the country, during the rule of the Khmer Kingdom. In addition, it shows a lot of archeological treasures.

Economy of the Siem Reap

The main source of income for the city is tourism. It is proved that 50% of the jobs in the city are related to tourism and this number is increasing. In 2010, one million people visited this city, but in 2014, this number was closer to 21 million. Visitors usually want to see the city and surrounding areas. It is expected that the number of visitors will continue to rise. As the result, there are a lot of new hotels and restaurants.

Climate of Siem Reap

Siem Reap has a tropical climate, which means that it is a warm place, due to the fact the temperatures rarely go below 30 degrees Celsius. On the other side, the wet season lasts long and it starts in April, but it ends in November. The rest of the months are warm and without rain. According to the Köppen, in one year, there are 1500 mm of rain. In general, it is very warm and it is recommended to visit the city during the dry season.
