One of the reasons that people love to visit the capital city of Cambodia is because the climate there is absolutely spectacular. With tropical like temperatures year round, Phnom Penh is a great place to vacation because the only thing you have to battle with is rain.

There are three primary seasons in this region: cool, hot, and rainy. The cool season is from November to March, the hot from March to May, and the rainy from May to October.

While the November to March is called the cool season, there is really nothing that cool about it. It never gets much colder than about 72 degrees, meaning you can enjoy a lot of time in the great outdoors in shorts and a t-shirt without any concerns about getting cold at all. For example, the average temperature on Christmas day is about 93 degrees, so expect to see Santa in a swimsuit and his sleigh to be a surfboard.

In the hot season the temperatures increase so that it is above 100 virtually every day. The sun is incredible during this time of the year, and you can truly love being outdoors if you a person who likes it when it is good and hot.

Starting in March begins the rainy season in Phnom Penh. When we say the rainy season, that is exactly what is meant. In December the rains begin to die down, and in January and February there is no more than about an inch total in rainfall for each of these months. However, as the calendar turns to March the rains start to pick up a bit.

By the time that the rainy season hits, you can expect some very serious torrential downpours. May averages better than 4.5 inches for the month on average, but by July that number increases to nearly eight inches for the month. September sees better than 10 inches on average and October gets nearly 13 inches a month on average?

Obviously, that amount of rainfall will mean a lot of flooding, and there will be some areas of the city that you will not be able to visit because they will be under water. Adding to the problem is the fact that three rivers converge at the city, so the amount of water in these final two months, in particular, can really be something.

For those who are looking for a dryer vacation, you should plan your trip accordingly. There are very few years when the amount of rainfall is significantly lower than normal, but you can be sure that it can be above the average, especially in years when there are a larger number of tsunamis than normal.

The overall average temperature for the city is about 83 degrees, with the average low occurring in January at 80 degrees. The average high for the year comes in April when the temperature has a mean of about 86 degrees. This lets you know that it will be plenty warm no matter what time of the year that you come here.
