Chaktomuk Conference Hall
Built in 1960, the Chaktomouk Hall was completed in 1961. This is a 570-seat auditorium, built on the banks of the Tonle Sap River in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. It is a truly amazing places to see a concert of performance.
The Unique Design
One of the things that people love about visiting the Chaktomuk Conference Hall is the way it looks. It has the appearance of a hand held fan. This makes the acoustics in it truly fantastic, and there is not a bad seat in the auditorium.
A Little History
This was originally known as the La Salle de Conference Chaktomuk, but in 1991 it was turned into a conference area. This development also included the idea that it would be turned into a restaurant. It remained this way until 1994, when it was decided to restore it as a theatre. This idea came about when the National Theatre was destroyed in a fire, and a new location sought. The hall was renovated and renamed the Chaktomuk Conference Hall when the refurbishing was completed in 2000.
From 1975 to 1979 the hall had been abandoned all together. This was the time that the Khmer Rouge government ruled the area, and many of the people that lived in the city prior to the tyrannical government taking power fled the area or were taken prisoner and forced into labor camps. This meant the hall was closed down as the “arts” was not a priority for Pol Pot and his government.
When the conference hall was refurbished in 2000, its focus was to provide conference facilities for international conferences. This changed over the years, and now is used primarily for performances. While the government still uses it for conferences and other official business, there are a great many live events that occur here each year. Because of the design, it is a great place to see a show.
What Kinds of Things You Can See
There are many different performing arts activities that are shown at the Chaktomuk Conference Hall. It is air conditioned and climate control, making it very comfortable while sitting to watch the performance. Because this is the new National Theatre, you will have the opportunity to see some of the best shows that one can imagine. They are beautifully performed and have the very best actors, actresses, producers and directors who come to perform here. It is a wonderful place to see a show for sure.
The most famous music festival in Cambodia is held at the conference hall. The International Music Festival provides performances of all kinds and types of music, and draws acts from all over the world. The city is abuzz when this event is going on, and the Chaktomuk Conference Hall is the center of the country while this event is in full swing.
Another aspect of it that many like is the location. Located right along the banks of the Tonle Sap River, it is a beautiful spot to take a walk before or after you see an event.
