Central Market Phnom Penh

First built in 1937, the Central Market of Phnom Penh is one of the most popular destinations for tourists and local residents of the capital of Cambodia. Known as the Psah Thom Thmey, the Central Market was designed with a dome in the center and four “arm” like branches that shoot out from the center. It was designed originally by French architect Louis Chauchon, and first opened the year that the construction began.

At the time it was the biggest market place in all of Asia, and continued to attract people from all over the region. In 2009, a massive renovation project began. The cost was about $4.2 million to renovate, and was funded by a French development agency.

Hours of Operation – open from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, the stores offer people the opportunity to shop during what are the normal business hours of the city. The market is open seven days a week during these hours.

The Look of the Market – the four wings of the Central Market, each house has several stalls that sells a wide variety of goods. Sizes of the stalls vary depending upon the goods that are offered, and the amount of traffic that a business attracts. Clearly, some do much better than others, meaning it is not surprising to see them four and five times the size of most other businesses.

In the center is a giant dome structure. It is yellow in look, and has a very decorative appearance. The center is actually the main covering to a sensational area of shops and information centers. It also has an amazing architectural design that is built in such a unique way that has an air ventilation that keeps it cool in the center.

What You Can Find at the Central Market – the enormous array of businesses and shops makes this a great place to find virtually any source of goods you could desire. It does not matter if you are looking for men’s, women’s, or children’s clothing, shoes, or accessories, handicraft art and paintings, watches, jewelry, or electronics, it is easy to find in this incredible market.

You will find many designer clothes at a price that is much cheaper than you would find anywhere else on earth, and there are many different knock-off brands that are available as well. They look incredibly authentic, and come at a price that anyone can afford.

The dishware is amazing as well. You will find some of the most beautifully designed pieces on spectacular glass or porcelain, again, at a price that is way beyond reasonable. The china is amazing and you will love the silverware and glassware as well.

Electronics shops are diverse and have some of the best software, games, stereo equipment, phones and other devices. You can find the very best in terms of electronics here, and will be able to get a lot more for your buck.
